Size guide
Every Julien Varenne piece has its own measurement chart on its product page, right below the description. This page explains how to use it so you get the right size first time.
How to measure yourself
You need a soft tailor's tape. Measure over thin clothing, standing relaxed, without pulling the tape tight.
| Measurement | Where to take it |
|---|---|
| Chest | Around the fullest part of the chest, with the tape parallel to the floor. |
| Waist | Around the narrowest part of the torso, usually at navel height. |
| Hips | Around the widest part of the hips, with your feet together. |
| Sleeve length | From the shoulder to the wrist, with the arm slightly bent. |
| Length | From the highest point of the shoulder to where you want the garment to end. |
How to read the chart
The figures in the charts are the garment measured flat, not your body. That is why they are larger than your own measurements: the difference is the ease the piece is designed to have. Compare your chest or hip measurement with the matching column and pick the size whose figure is equal to or slightly larger than yours.
Clothing charts are given in centimetres and inches. Footwear charts show the European and US equivalents; the number you choose in the shop is always the European one.
If you are between two sizes
For fitted pieces and stretch knits the smaller size usually works better, because the fabric gives. For coats, jackets and anything you will wear over another layer, take the larger one. When a particular style runs small or large we say so on its own product page: on most you will see the note that it is true to your usual size.
Footwear
If you are between two numbers, take the larger one: a slightly roomy shoe is wearable, a tight one is not. To check, place your foot on a sheet of paper, mark the heel and the longest toe, and measure the distance between the two marks.
Accessories
Bags, sunglasses, necklaces, hats, gloves and belts are one size, unless the product page says otherwise.
And if I still get it wrong
You have 30 days to return any order and returns are free, so you can try things on at home without rushing. If you would rather ask before buying, write to us from the contact page with your measurements and the style you like and we will tell you which size to order.
